Chapter 1: A New Mystery

Usagi sat on her bed, quietly staring at her dresser. It was now exactly one month since she had defeated Chaos and watched her friends die at its mercy. In fact, the truth was that she had no reason to explain her presence here. She had been so peaceful, drowning in the harmony of the Galaxy Cauldron with her friends, waiting to be reborn into the new era of the Crystal Millennium, the time for Crystal Tokyo. Then she had emerged, whether prematurely or not, she did not know, and her star seed traveled to the place it had always known as home, the home of the Tsukinos. There, in her room, she had materialized, covered by nothing, and fell to her bed.

Her family had been as surprised as she was, when she walked down the stairs for dinner, nonchalantly, as though she hadn't been gone for three weeks. She had no concept of time. Reality seemed to overlap into itself, and time became non-existent. Although her absence had caused her family great concern, she refused to discuss details about where she had been and why. For some reason, a void had formed where her trust had been, and she couldn't figure out why. Not that she could tell them if she wanted, she knew that her history and truth would not bode well and would weigh on them. That being said, she realized that she would have to carry her own pain and fears, and confusion until the senshi and Mamoru returned, if they returned. Until then, she would have to live in this existence pretending to be the innocent, content, bright Usagi she had been before she left.

"Usagi! Can you run to the shop and pick up some groceries? I need them for supper." Ikuko yelled.

"Hai, Okaa-san." Usagi answered, as she stood up, and wiped the silent tears from her eyes, grabbing her coat along the way. Before she left, she took one look in the mirror. Every day since she had returned, her hair had been changing into a glossy coat of white. As of now, it was a beautiful blend of both blonde and whitish blonde, and she wondered how much longer it would be before it completely turned.

Walking downstairs and grasping the grocery list laid on the table, she delicately placed her feet in her comfortable black shoes and headed out the door. A cool gust of wind waltzed past her and she pulled her collar up around her neck, silently shutting the door behind her.

In the house, Ikuko had thoughts of her own, like where Usagi had been, and if she had been kidnapped. She did know that the Usagi that had returned was not acting like her baby. She was sullen, lonely, distant, and kept to herself. Ikuko supposed it had something to do with where she had disappeared to for three weeks, but knew that Usagi wouldn't open up to her willingly. In all actuality, Ikuko didn't know exactly what she had done to be deprived of the trust of her daughter. She liked to think that she always did what was best. Although she knew that she had a quick temper, everything that she did was to help Usagi, to push her along her way. Sometimes she wondered if she had just pushed Usagi that one notch too far. Her thoughts were interrupted as the door beat open and the chilled air crashed into the house. Ikuko heard the wrinkling of paper bags and the soft click that the door made when closed. The shuffling of slippers was heard and Usagi appeared in the kitchen.

"I picked up the things you wanted." She said with fake cheeriness.

"Thanks. That was quick." Ikuko said as she quickly began unpacking the food. "Usagi, dear, you know that you can talk to me, don't you?"

"A-about what mom?" Usagi breathed.

"About anything." Ikuko explained.

"I know what you're referring to, mom, and I'm fine, never been better. If I wanted to talk about it I would, but I don't, and I can't, so please, leave it where it is." Usagi remarked.

Ikuko was surprised at Usagi's sharp words, and grabbed her arm. “Don't use that tone with me young lady,” she responded. It was then she truly noticed the sadness that had engulfed her baby, and let go, shocked. Usagi's eyes wept but her face was stoic.

Usagi's eyes returned to normal and she sniffed and walked toward the door again, leaving her mother in the kitchen to wonder what just happened. Before she left, she shared one knowing glance to let her mother know that she was headed out for her daily walk. Ikuko nodded, and Usagi left again in a scurry.

Usagi went for a walk every day since she came back. Somehow she was always led to the park. Maybe it was because it was the site of so many happy memories. Today was no different. She walked to the same bench that she and Mamoru had shared and sat, taking a book of philosophy out of her coat pocket and sitting down to read it. She could remember clear as day when Mamoru had given that to her. She had been angry because he hadn't been listening when she talked, and had demanded that he hand over the book. He was so sweet, and actually did as she asked. Since then, she had secretly begun reading it herself, and hadn't given it back because she found it increasingly interesting. Those were the carefree days. She honestly believed that they would return, one day. Until then, she would continue her walks in solitude, and skimming through the chapters of philosophy.

Just as she was getting into the book, she heard a crash not far away. Standing up and reluctantly putting her book away, she transformed into the warrior of love and justice, Eternal Sailor Moon, and walked over to investigate.

A young girl lay immobile under a tree, though conscious. Usagi walked over and somehow managed to lift the tree off of her.

"I transformed for this?" she thought, while at the same time, asking the girl if she was okay and helping her up.

However, the girl was most certainly not okay. Her hair changed from light blonde to black and her normally bright eyes changed to a dark green, and began to blink rapidly. Ear splitting laughter echoed from her and Usagi found herself shielding her ears. However, it wasn't her ears she needed to worry about. What happened next would shock her forever.

The girl began to separate in two, almost as though there was a being trying to come out of her, and after much tugging and screaming, the two stood successfully next to one another. One had short, dark hair and menacing green eyes, while another had blonde hair and bright aqua eyes. The evil looking one disappeared in a tuft of black smoke before Usagi could even ask who she was, while the other girl fell forward onto the ground.

"Alright, what the heck was that?" Usagi asked her.

The girl pulled herself up and glared at Usagi.

"It's none of your business, you spoiled brat. Besides, why should the Moon Princess concern herself with my problems? It's not like you acknowledged anyone below your status." The girl growled.

"Excuse me?" Usagi stated. She was definitely not in the mood for this bullshit. "If you hadn't noticed, I just helped you. I think I at least deserve a thank you for saving your ass."

"You would think that wouldn't you?" The girl snottily replied. "Well here are my thanks, Serenity, for 1000 years of loneliness!"

With that, the girl transformed into a senshi. However, she didn't sport a normal type fuku, but a strapped top and flowing skirt.

"Dream Displacement!" She yelled, and Usagi felt herself fall into space.

Usagi looked around to find a place much like the portals in which the time gates were located, only this time there were no time gates. She heard only the voice of the girl who had sent her there, mocking her, humiliating her and most of all, resenting her. Below her, a hole suddenly opened up and Usagi felt herself falling continuously to the blackness. She closed her eyes, only to open them and see...her bedroom?

She sat up quickly in her bed and realized she was still in her Sailor Moon uniform. She powered down quickly and took off her shoes and coat. God forbid her mother sees her wearing her shoes in the house! She then walked out of her bedroom, to downstairs.

"Usagi, I didn't know you were home!" Ikuko said.

"Um, I slipped in a while ago, mom." Usagi covered.

She looked out in her porch. Her slippers were in place where she left them.

"Weird." She thought. Then she walked over and flipped on the television to see if there was any news on the new senshi, and sat in her mother's lazy boy to think.

"She called out Dream Displacement, so perhaps she is Sailor Dream." Usagi pondered. "She also sent me into some sort of limbo that ended up as a dream. I wonder where she came from and why she is here." Then more thoughts entered Usagi's head: the strange way the girl resented Usagi and how she knew that Usagi was the Moon Princess, and knew her real name. And what had she meant by 1000 years of loneliness? Usagi didn't know. They were all questions to be answered.

She flipped the channels until she reached the news station. Usagi saw a girl dressed in a green sailor fuku facing off with the same girl she had seen earlier. They were destroying half of the city in their fight!

"Why right now? I just sat down!" Usagi protested. Shingo walked up and hauled the lazy boy back until Usagi was looking up at him.

"You must be psychic onee-chan. Mom said it's my turn to watch TV, meatball, so get up!" he said.

Usagi quickly let the lazy boy set itself upright, hitting Shingo in the chin. She stood up and threw the remote at him, to which he stood trying to catch it, as she pulled on her coat, and slammed the door, leaving to stop the rampaging senshi from destroying Tokyo.
